Workshop 1. Writing Text and Making an Image

Aim:
Exploring the Birth Rites Collection via the online tour and digital gallery space Navigating Mortality. Participants are asked to produce two creative responses to the collection’s artworks:

1. Write up to 250 words about an artwork in the collection — either one you are drawn to or one you dislike. Consider the following questions:

  • Why did you choose this work?

  • What emotional landscape does it evoke?

  • How does the materiality of the work inform your response?

  • What are the political or social implications of the piece?

2. Building on your written response, choose one of the following visual tasks:

  • a) Capture a photograph using your mobile phone of something from your everyday life that resonates with a work from the collection.

  • b) Draw the artwork and create an intervention in the drawing — add or remove something.

  • c) Construct a still life using objects from your surroundings that resonates with the artwork. Take a photograph of it.

Consider the medium, content, composition, materiality, and visual language of the original work in your response.
